In a technological age, the importance of science is self-evident. Finding out how the physical and biological world operates is of interest to most young people. The Science Department at Worth aims to encourage students in their understanding and knowledge, and to develop their powers of critical thinking.
The department consists of a suite of eight laboratories and one teaching room, with associated preparation rooms, office and storage. Labs are fully equipped for the teaching of all sciences to Sixth Form level and all have Smart Boards .The department is housed in an attractive, listed building.
There are currently 16 members of the teaching staff: five physicists, five chemists and six biologists.
Throughout the Year Groups there is a strong emphasis upon practical work, both in the laboratory and in the field.
Years 7 to 9
General Science is taught to students in Years 7 and 8, with the aim of introducing these younger pupils to the fascination of the subject. The course embraces technology through the use of e-books and interactive activities in addition to practical work and other traditional teaching methods. In Year 9 all students begin their study of the three sciences – Biology, Chemistry and Physics – as separate subjects, forming a solid basis for their International GCSE courses.
Years 10 & 11
The three separate sciences are offered in Years 10 and 11 as part of Edexcel’s International GCSE course. This option is recommended for students with a real interest in science and for those who may wish to take any science-based subject at a higher level. Each subject covers the core requirements of the Double Science Award along with additional material to gain a thorough foundation in each of the disciplines.
Our Double Award Science course leads to two International Science GCSEs and covers the same core material as the three separate subjects.
Our Combined Science course is offered to those who are best served by studying a deduced content of all three science disciplines, leading to one International Science GCSE.
Each of the sciences is offered at AS and A2 Level, or as part of the International Baccalaureate at Standard and Higher level. Science in the sixth form includes some challenging and rewarding topics and allows students to develop their powers of critical thinking and interest in their subject area.
