Forerunners
at Worth

The Forerunners are a team of youth ministers who work in collaboration with the monastic community and the chaplains in the School. The term forerunner refers to a person who goes ahead of another to prepare the way. The most famous forerunner in the Bible was John the Baptist who prepared the way for Christ and from whom the Forerunners take their inspiration.

The Forerunners specifically seek to bring about a culture of Benedictine discipleship in the School. This means meeting with students and enabling them to engage with their spiritual journey should they want to. At Worth, this journey is described as “Explore/Involve/Commit” through which students can choose to engage at their own level and pace with the Christian faith.

As well as providing numerous activities and prayer experiences for the students, the Forerunners also work alongside the Drama, Music, Sport and Art departments, which enables the students to get to know the Forerunners outside of the chaplaincy context.

The following are the principles of the Forerunner model of discipleship, drawn from John 1:35-42:

  • "Standing with" - our ministry is relational
  • “Behold the Lamb of God” – our ministry is encounter focused
  • "What do you seek?” – our ministry encourages searching questions
  • “Come and see” – our ministry is invitational
  • “They stayed with him that day” – our ministry is hospitable
  • “You shall be called Cephas” – our ministry is vocational
