Visiting theatre company presents thought-provoking play
Students yesterday watched a thought-provoking performance from a visiting theatre company about the life of German SS officer and physician in the Auschwitz concentration camp Josef Mengele.
'Mengele' is a new play written and performed by Tim Marriott, who is an established actor, playwright and teacher. His most prominent acting role was as Gavin Featherly in the hugely popular 1990s sitcom The Brittas Empire.
All of Year 9 plus Year 10 and 12 drama students were able to watch 'Mengele', an excellent one-hour play which will be performed at the Edinburgh Festival later this year. After the performance, the children took part in a question and answer session with Tim Marriott and fellow actor Emma Zadow on the play, the questions it raised and why this piece of theatre had been presented in the way it had, before enjoying an informal talk with the play's two performers.
Josef Mengele was a notorious member of the team of doctors responsible for the selection of victims to be killed in the gas chambers and for performing deadly human experiments on prisoners. After the Second World War, he fled to South America, where he evaded capture for the rest of his life. The play imagines him being washed on to the beach where he drowned in 1979 and being provoked by the young woman who drags him ashore.
