A fascinating History trip to Berlin gave Year 11 students the opportunity to consolidate their GCSE course on Germany and the Cold War.
The trip at the end of the first half of term began with a visit to the German Spy Museum, an interactive museum that looks at the role Berlin played in the spy industry in the Cold War. Later that day students went to the Reichstag government building for a visit to the Dome and to enjoy views across the city.
Day two included a visit to the Nazi concentration camp Sachsenhausen, which is just outside Berlin, and a tour of the former East German Stasi prison.
A packed Sunday included the Topography of Terror Museum which looks at the Nazi terror techniques and is situated on the site of the former Gestapo headquarters. That was followed by visits to Checkpoint Charlie; Bebel Platz, the site of the Nazi book burnings; the Holocaust Memorial and its museum; plus the Berlin wall memorial. The day finished with a meal and bowling.
The four-day trip finished on the Monday with a visit to the Berlin Bunker Museum which looks at Berlin and Germany in WW2.
This was a compelling trip for our students and will help them immensely as they work towards their GCSE exams next year.
