Celebrating a great year of sport at Worth

Worth School

From rugby to hockey, football, golf, cricket, athletics, lacrosse, equestrian and much more, it was another hugely successful year for sport at Worth with many achievements to celebrate.

The 1st XV rugby boys won eight out of 10 fixtures and also made it out of the group stages at the National Schools Sevens for the first time, while the girls’ rugby sevens team qualified for day two of the National Sevens for a third year in succession.

Our 1st XI hockey girls, now under the guidance of double Olympian Mr Calum Giles, won nine and drew two of their 13 fixtures, which is hugely impressive. In total we had 23 girls’ and boys’ hockey teams from U12 to U18 represent the School in 2023-24.

The football season was heavily impacted by the weather but there was still success to celebrate including the U13A team winning five of their eight games, while it has been great to see the continued growth of girls’ football at Worth with teams playing at U13, U15 and U18 level. The same can be said for girls’ cricket too, with the U15 girls enjoying an unbeaten season, the U14 girls winning both games they played and the U13s winning two from three. The 1st XI cricket team – which was a mixture of boys and girls – won eight and drew one of their 11 fixtures and there was also a school record opening partnership of 270.

We had county representatives in cross country, athletics, cricket, rugby and hockey. The basketball team won four out of five fixtures in their league and the golfers won through to regional finals of the HMC foursomes. There was a lacrosse trip to the Rendcomb tournament and the first ever boys’ lacrosse match took place.

Our equestrian team qualified for four national championships including the Royal Windsor Horse Show, our U16 tennis boys won the Sussex Plate competition, while the athletics season was very successful with record numbers of pupils competing and Worth winning many Diamond League medals. We also celebrated the return of badminton fixtures and the introduction of the new Worth Community Trophy internal sports competition.

At the final assembly of the academic year, there were numerous presentations including Most Valuable Player and Most Improved Player awards for athletics, tennis and cricket, colours and half colours for tennis and cricket, the winners of the Worth Community Trophy and the re-presentation of the Mitchell Shields, which are awarded each year to an individual boy and girl to recognise not only sporting excellence but also endeavour, commitment, contribution across all three terms and the upholding of the values of sport at Worth.

Well done to everyone who contributed to another successful year for sport at Worth and thank you to all our coaches who have helped our students reach new heights this year.

Here are a few pictures from the presentations at the final assembly.
