Choir sings at Westminster Cathedral

Worth’s choir, the Schola Cantorum, received glowing praise after returning to Westminster Cathedral last Saturday to sing for the evening Vigil Mass.

The choir last sang at the Cathedral in 2022. As well as leading the congregation in hymns and mass responses, they performed choral music including the Kyrie and Gloria from Viadana’s Missa L’Hora Passa, Bruckner’s much-loved motet ‘Locus Iste’ and Franck’s ‘Panis Angelicus’. This is all repertoire the choir will perform on tour to Italy this summer.

Saturday turned out to be a momentous day to sing at the Cathedral as the funeral of Pope Francis took place that morning in the Vatican. As a result, the choir sang to a near capacity congregation at the Cathedral of more than 1,000 people. The choir were congratulated on their singing, including by one visitor present at the Mass who wrote in to praise the choir’s “glorious voices and their perfect delivery”.

Music and choral singing thrives at Worth. The choir has had a long tradition of members being part of the National Youth Choir of Great Britain and has had among its members multiple former choristers of Westminster Cathedral in recent years.
