Debating is high quality

All 10 Houses at Worth have showcased their public speaking and debating skills in the first round of our annual House Debating Cup.

Even our Junior House for Years 7 and 8 pupils, Austin, took part and impressed immensely as they took on reigning cup holders Farwell.

Head of English, Mrs Dawn Clubb, who runs the Debating Society at Worth, said: “The quality of debate has been better than last year, which has been impressive.  The House rivalry is alive and well and what has been most exciting has been to see large groups of students attending the competition and cheering for their Houses.

“I am incredibly proud of every House and every speaker. To stand in front of your peers and a group of teachers who are judging you takes phenomenal courage. To do it in order to discuss a motion you received 15 minutes before you began speaking is even more impressive.”

The Houses that have progressed to the semi-final stage are St Anne’s, Farwell, Gervase, Rutherford and St Bede’s. The grand final will take place on Tuesday 3 May.

Worth offers both a Junior and a Senior Debating Society as part of the Co-Curriculum.
