Worth was honoured to welcome John Lytton, the 5th Earl of Lytton, to the School last Friday to talk to students about the work of the House of Lords and his role in it, as part of the popular ‘Learn with the Lords’ programme.

During the visit the Earl of Lytton spoke to a selected group which included Sixth Form Politics students on a range of topics including his journey into politics and the role the House of Lords has in the passing of laws, holding the Government to account and making recommendations to the Government through its committee work.

He then answered some excellent questions from students on subjects such as the new House of Lords (hereditary peers) bill, the Rwanda bill, whether the House of Lords was right in trying to amend the Brexit bill, whether the House of Lords should become a second chamber like the US Senate, his thoughts of the fact that hereditary peerage descends down the male line and the most rewarding challenge he has faced in his role.

Miss Sarah Clarke, Head of History and Politics at Worth, said: “The visit from Earl Lytton has helped to consolidate pupils’ understanding of how Politics works in the UK and specifically the work of the House of Lords and how they can bring different expertise and knowledge to Parliament. This talk was especially invaluable for our A Level students who are currently studying the importance of the House of Lords and will give them real examples they can use in their exams.”

The Earl of Lytton already has links with Worth in that he was a prep school Worthian in his youth while his sons Philip and Wilfrid both went to Worth.

The Learn with the Lords programme is a unique opportunity for students to interact with a member of the House of Lords and learn more about the vital role it plays in the UK Parliament.
