Having competed in the regional finals of the English-Speaking Union MACE Competition 24 hours earlier, another successful debating season at Worth concluded with our annual Debating Society Gala Evening last Friday as students took on an alumni team.
This popular annual event saw a team of former students, who were prominent members of the Debating Society during their time at Worth, return to the School to oppose the motion ‘This House will impose a four-day working week on businesses’.
While the current students did a good job as the government, the judging panel declared the Old Worthians team as the winners. The judges included former students Alexander Stewart-Clark and Chris McCourt.
The previous evening a team of three students represented Worth in the regional finals of the English-Speaking Union MACE Competition. This was only the second time that Worth had reached the regional finals of this prestigious competition.
With six schools competing, Worth were the second best team on the evening but only one school progressed to the national finals, so we just missed out. However, the boys representing Worth did an excellent job, convincingly winning their debate against Bennett Memorial Diocesan School.
Mrs Dawn Clubb, who runs the Debating Society at Worth, said: “Our team did the School proud but only one went through. The feedback from the judges was very good but they chose the hosts, Mayfield Girls, who were also very good. The judges said we had been given a very technical motion in our debate and we did very well.”
The final picture shows our team at the English-Speaking Union regional finals.
