Impressive start to House debating

Worth School

All students at Worth have the opportunity to get involved with debating through the annual Inter-House competition and it was impressive to see our students do so well in this year’s first round.

There were five debates which took place in the Inter-House Debating Competition last week, with St Anne’s, St Catherine’s, Chapman, Rutherford and St Bede’s reaching the second round. The competition will conclude with a grand final at the end of November.

While the Inter-House competition is open to any student, the School also runs a thriving Debating Society which is optional to join. In recent years, the Debating Society has enjoyed several successes including winning the Ethics Cup, a national debating competition, in 2022 and the Hartland International Debating Competition in 2024.

Among the benefits of debating are learning presentation skills through effective speech composition and delivery, structure and organising thoughts, improving critical thinking, listening, teamwork and improving confidence.

Later this month Worth will host the first round of the English-Speaking Union MACE competition.
