Sixth Form Physics students on a four-day trip to Geneva enjoyed an inspiring mix of diplomacy, cultural discovery and science which included visiting CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research.

Worth runs this trip every two years. It gives students the opportunity to explore world-leading institutions in the Geneva region, while the visit to CERN, which is also the birthplace of the World Wide Web, is particularly enlightening.

This year’s trip began with a visit to the United Nations Office at Geneva. Students toured the historic Palais des Nations, stepping into conference rooms where global discussions about peace, human rights and international cooperation take place. They gained a valuable understanding of how the UN works to promote security, support humanitarian efforts and address major global challenges.

The group then toured CERN where they explored exhibitions explaining the work of the Large Hadron Collider and CERN’s role in advancing our understanding of fundamental particles. They learned about the discovery of the Higgs boson and the technological innovations, such as the early development of the World Wide Web, that have emerged from CERN’s cutting edge research.

A further highlight of the trip was a visit to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). At the ICRC Museum, students engaged with interactive exhibits showing how humanitarian workers operate in conflict zones, the importance of the Geneva Conventions and the organisation’s global mission to protect vulnerable individuals and families affected by war and disaster.

In addition to time in Geneva, students also visited a plasma research institute near Lucerne, where they were introduced to the science behind fusion energy – the process that powers the sun. They learned how scientists study super hot plasma in magnetic confinement devices and how this research could one day lead to clean, sustainable energy. The visit offered an exciting look at an area of physics with enormous potential for the future and gave students an appreciation of Switzerland’s leadership in advanced scientific research.

The trip also offered time to enjoy the beauty and culture of Geneva. Students visited the iconic Jet d’Eau, explored the Old Town and St Peter’s Cathedral, and they enjoyed lakeside walks with views of the Alps. These moments offered a welcome balance of education, history and leisure.

Overall, the trip was a rewarding and memorable experience. Students returned with a deeper understanding of global diplomacy, cutting edge science and humanitarian work, along with wonderful memories and broadened horizons.
