Worth School

The best of music at Worth was celebrated with the final of this year’s Worth Musician of the Year in front of visiting judges in the Whitehead Room.

The adjudicators were Annabel Kidd and Raphael Chinn, who are members of Resol String Quartet who have worked with our students on two other occasions this year in a strings masterclass and an orchestral rehearsal. They had a difficult job deciding a winner between the four finalists: Tobias – trombone; Astrid – voice; Charlotte – cello; and Cezary – piano.

All the finalists gave superbly confident, polished, musical and engaging performances and the adjudicators praised them on this. The adjudicators commented that it was incredibly close between the winner and the runner-up, but the winner in the end was Year 13 pianist Cezary who gave a superb account of Brahms’ Intermezzo in A, Chopin’s Nocturne in E and the stunning Concert Krakowiak by 20th Century Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz. Runner-up Charlotte gave a moving performance of Fauré’s Elegie and Bach’s Prelude from his First Cello Suite.

It was also a delight to see the sense of camaraderie between all the participants, which was good evidence of the core philosophy of Worth’s Music department of the balance of inclusion with excellence and a musical community open to all.
