Rugby boys reach national quarter-finals

Our 1st XV rugby boys are through to the last eight of the National Vase following an excellent 31-20 victory away to Maidstone Grammar School in yesterday’s area final.

The boys performed superbly to claim a place in the national quarter-finals and to extend their sequence of results this academic year to 13 wins out of 13.

With a partisan crowd getting behind the hosts, Worth managed the game superbly, establishing a comfortable half-time advantage. A converted Maidstone try late in the second half made the final score look closer than perhaps it was.

This competition culminates in a final at Twickenham, although Worth boys are certainly not getting ahead of themselves and their only focus for now is on the quarter-final fixture. The draw for the last eight takes place on Monday 25 November and the quarter-finals are expected to take place before Christmas, although that is to be confirmed.

This is the furthest Worth has gone in this competition since the 2013-14 academic year when the School lost 28-27 in the quarter-finals to Exeter College who went on to reach the final at Twickenham. That season the boys won 15 out of 21 fixtures. The current squad will take their 100% record to Churcher’s College for the penultimate fixture in this year’s Daily Mail Trophy next Saturday. So far Worth has seven wins from seven in the Daily Mail Trophy.

The current team has already exceeded the record achieved by the 2006-07 squad which won 11 and drew one out of 14 fixtures, including winning the Sussex Cup. That squad included Tom Mitchell who went on to captain Great Britain rugby sevens team to silver at the Rio Olympics in 2016.

In 2017-18, our U15 side reached the National Bowl final which was played at Sixways Stadium, Worcester.
