Motivational speaker Alexander McLean gave students an inspiring start to the week when he talked to them about the work of his charity Justice Defenders and the importance of serving others.
As Worth’s Social Entrepreneur in Residence, Mr McLean has strong links with the School and many will fondly recall the empowering address he gave as guest speaker at our Speech Day in 2023.
Mr McLean is the founder and CEO of Justice Defenders. Speaking in assembly on Monday, he talked about the work the charity does providing legal advice, training and education to prisoners and prison officers in Kenya, Uganda and The Gambia, empowering those most in need of justice to access it for themselves.
He gave an example of how the charity has supported someone who studied law while on death row and the individual’s subsequent campaign led to legal reforms.
Mr McLean then related to students the importance of doing something for others in our everyday lives and looking for the good in people.
Having trained as a barrister and magistrate, Mr McLean is a Senior TED Fellow, Ashoka Fellow and UK Young Philanthropist of the Year. He has appeared in TIME Magazine’s 30 Under 30 Changing the World and ‘The Power List’, featuring Britain’s most influential people of African and African-Caribbean heritage.
Community and service are two of Worth’s six values which shape the way all students and those working at the School live their everyday lives.
